Finalmente, después de idas y venidas publicamos www.drumwatch.com
Quizás esto no signifique mucho para ustedes, pero es un gran avance, ya que contar con nuestro propio espacio en internet nos permitirá poco a poco ir mejorando el sitio incluyendo nuevas características que wordpress no nos permitía.
Queremos pedirles disculpas por el tiempo que estuvimos inactivos, somos muy pocas personas que trabajamos para mantener DrumWatch y a veces se nota, pero esperamos que también se note que lo hacemos con muchas ganas y energías.
Queremos agradecerles por visitar DrumWatch día a día y ayudarnos con la publicación de material. Deseamos que esto sea un lugar en común para todos los bateristas, un lugar donde opinar, expresarse y aprender.
Esperamos que el 2010 sea tan bueno para ustedes como creemos que lo será para nosotros.

Mejorando el swing

En este post proponemos una serie de ejercicios para desarrollar un buen ostinato de swing.
A pesar de que muchos bateristas suelen darle su toque particular (algunos lo tocan bien “atresillados”, pero muchos otros lo ajustan para que la última corchea este más pegada a la negra, dándole una sensación “binaria”) es importante que en el comienzo de su estudio cada nota se toque donde esta escrita. Solo así podremos modificarlo a gusto mas tarde.

El Free Stroke esta basado en los principios de la física. Esto significa que debes permitir que el palillo se mueva naturalmente en un principio y luego aprender a controlarlo a gusto.
El ejemplo perfecto seria el rebote de una pelota (Balón) de basketball. Hay una fuerza inicial que es la que la hace rebotar por primera vez, pero luego el rebote se produce naturalmente por las características de la pelota y el suelo, entonces solo nos queda poder controlar su movimiento con la mano sin necesidad de utilizar grandes esfuerzos.

The Free Stroke is based on principles of physics. This means that you must allow the stick to rebound and move freely in the first place and then learn to control that movement.
The perfect example would be a bouncing basketball. There’s an initial movement that allows the ball to rebound the first time, but then the rebound is produced naturally by the characteristics of the ball and the floor, then we can control its movement without big effort.

grandes. No solo un excelente baterista, sino que un gran profesor. No todos los bateristas que se destacan por su performance saben transmitir sus conocimientos con la misma efectividad. Es más, a muchos ni les interesa.
Lo sabemos por conocer gente que ha tomado lecciones con el, es un gran profesor y una gran persona.

El set de Roy C. Knapp

ROY C. KNAPP
(Oct. 26, 1891; d. Jun. 16, 1979)
Roy C. Knapp, conocido como el Decano de los profesores de percusión, fue un reconocido baterista, percusionista y solista de xilofón. En 1938 fundó la Escuela de percusión Roy C. Knapp en Chicago. A partir de allí se convirtió en un reconocido profesor. Entre sus alumnos se pueden encontrar nombres como Gene Kruppa, Louie Bellson, Dave Tough, Baby Dodds and Bobby Christian. También se comenta que Buddy Rich tomó alguna que otra clase con el (Esto es algo que Louie Bellson afirmó en una entrevista).
Este artículo nos interesó más que nada porque contiene fotografías de lo que era su set en aquel entonces. Por eso los invitamos a que lo visiten.

Variación de Mejorando el Tempo – Improving Tempo Variation

Hoy vamos a publicar una propuesta que nos envía Manuel de Colombia.
El nos escribió un mail a drumwatch@gmail.com proponiendo una variación sobre los ejercicios del post Mejorando el tempo – Improving your tempo.
La variación consiste en utilizar los cuatro miembros en la ejecución de los ejercicios tomando como patrón de “sticking” la hoja número 1 del libro Stick Control de George Lawrence Stone, cambiando los golpes con mano derecha (R) por golpes con mano derecha e izquierda (MD, MI) consecutivamente; y los golpes con mano izquierda (L) por golpes con Pie derecho y Pie Izquierdo (PD, PI) consecutivamente.

The variation is made by using the first page of the George Lawrece Stone Stick Control book with the Mejorando el tempo – Improving your tempo exercises, changing Right hand strokes for Right and Left hand strokes (MD, MI), and the Left hand strokes for Right and Left foot strokes (PD, PI).

Muchos subestimamos los ejercicios de calentamiento y desarrollo de agilidad a la hora de estudiar batería, pero debemos recordar que tocar la batería requiere de movimientos que muchas veces rozan lo gimnástico y requieren de “entrenamiento” (aunque a muchos no les guste esa palabra).
Rod Morgenstein nos ofrece estos ejercicios tomados de su libro Drumset Warm-Ups.
Muchos de ellos no son ejercicios “divertidos” o “creativos”, fueron pensados para adquirir mayor agilidad y respuesta sobre el set.

Un colega de Rosario, Argentina escribió este mail que describe una realidad que sufren los músicos de ese país.
Creemos que es muy importante difundir esta información, por lo tanto por hoy nos desviamos un poquito de la temática del blog.
Si estas de acuerdo o sucede lo mismo en tu ciudad deja tu comentario. Que todos conozcamos la realidad nos ayuda a modificarla. Gracias!
Buenas gente:
Estamos queriendo organizar una movida para que el arreglo que se les pide a las bandas para tocar en bares en Rosario sea más justo.
Hoy en día para tocar en cualquier bar, las bandas tienen que pagar sonido (algo justo), pero además del sonido se les pide que paguen una suma adicional de entre $200 y $500 dependiendo el lugar… en concepto de que exactamente?… de nada, es el bar asegurandose una ganancia extra, pero la cuestion no termina ahí nomás, muchas veces debemos ceder también un porcentaje de las entradas anticipadas o en puerta, o a veces de las dos (y esto dejando de lado que los bares además se llevan ganancias de lo vendido en barra gracias a la gente que las bandas le llevan al lugar y que no irían de otra manera).
Esto deja a los músicos con una ganancia mínima (cuando exíste), y no es justo que después de pagar por ensayos, equipos, sonido, traslado (y algúnas cosas más) debamos además pagar por trabajar… NADIE paga por trabajar, ni abogados, ni doctores, ni carpinteros, ni soldadores, ni barrenderos, etc… solo las bandas.
La idea es la siguiente: realizar un paro de actividades de la siguiente manera:

41 Festival de Jazz en Barcelona

Ya casi estamos en noviembre y para los que tenemos la suerte de vivir en Barcelona eso significa “Festival de Jazz!“
Este año la joyita, a nuestro entender, será la visita de Jimmy Cobb y su So What Band (Remembering the Miles Davis classic).
Jimmy Cobb fue el baterista original de la grabación Kind of Blue de Miles, que reunió a músicos de la talla de Bill Evans, John Coltrane, Cannonball Adderley, Wynton Kelly (Piano en Freddie Freeloader) y Paul Chambers. Hoy día el es el único integrante que sigue con vida y se presenta el sábado 7 en el Palau de la Música Catalana.

Quizás sea hora de parar un poco con los rudimentos, pero algunas personas nos preguntaron si teníamos algo de información respecto al Rudimental Ritual de Alan Dawson. Déjenos decirles que si.
Alan Dawson fue un baterista estadounidense nacido en 1929. Ha sido maestro de numerosos virtuosos de la batería. Quizás su alumno mas destacable fue Tony Williams (No me hace falta contarles quien es Tony Willams, ¿o si?). Para mas información sobre Alan pueden acceder a wikipedia
